Carol L. Shinn

Carol L. (Harrington) Shinn, 85, formerly of Wichita, died Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

Funeral Service: 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 3, 2018, United Methodist Church, Conway Springs.

Carol was born June 17, 1933 on a farm southeast of Clearwater to Lloyd Albert and Emarene (Robinson) Harrington. She spent her early life northwest of Viola where she attended the Peotone rural school before the family moved to a farm southeast of Conway Springs where Carol attended the 4th & 5th grades at Spencer Hill country school. Two years later, the Harrington’s settled on their home place 3 miles north and 2 ½miles east of Conway Springs and Carol attended Conway Springs public schools. She graduated from Conway Springs High School with the class of 1951. Carol continued her education and received a B.A. degree in Home Economics from Friends University in 1955. She taught Home Economics at John Marshall Intermediate and Central Junior High in Wichita, Kansas from 1955 to 1957.

Carol was united in marriage to Truman Lee Shinn on August 7, 1955 in the First Presbyterian Church in Conway Springs. They made their first home at 1448 N. Woodland in Wichita. Carol and Truman moved to 3135 N. Sedgwick on March 14, 1964 where they spent the winter months while the summer endeavor was helping Truman’s father with the farming operation northeast of Conway Springs. Carol and Truman took over the farm business in 1975 and expanded the agriculture production a great deal throughout the coming years. They retired to Conway Springs in May of 2002. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 2005. Carol and Truman were involved in an automobile accident which took Truman’s life on January 20, 2014.

Carol was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Conway Springs where she served as church lector for many years. She was a member and past president of the Lady Lionesses and had been active in Home Economics in Homemaking group and the Retired Home Economics Teachers Luncheon Group. Carol was an officer in the Wichita Area Track & Field Official Association assisting with numerous track meets in the Wichita area including the High School State Track Meet for many years.

Carol is survived by son Theron (Michelle) Shinn; daughters: Daria (Brent) Ebersole, Cara (Tom) Leahy all of Conway Springs; brothers: Dale Harrington of Lakewood, CO; Lynn Harrington of Augusta; Neal Harrington of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren: Talan (Ashlynn) Shinn, Alyssa (Scott) Pauly, Taylor Shinn, Trista (Chase) Boyd, Trenton (Holly) Ebersole, Carl (Molly) Leahy, Brenna Leahy and one great-grandson Theodore Leahy.
