Joan Martin

Joan Martin passed away on Friday, March 13, 2020 at Botkin Care and Rehab in Wellington, Kansas at the age of 93. Joan was born the daughter of Ronald J. and Jessie Mae Carter on August 6, 1926 at the farm home near Tampa in Marion County, Kansas.

She graduated from a one room country school in Marion County and attended Durham High School. At the age of 16, she moved with her parents to their farm home near Saffordville, Kansas. Joan graduated from Toledo Township High School in Saffordville, Kansas. She attended Emporia State Teachers College and the College of Emporia.

On December 28, 1944, Joan and Walter Martin were united in marriage in Emporia, Kansas. They lived on a farm near Saffordville where they were active member of the Saffordville Methodist Church. Joan taught school at a one-room country school in Lyon County and also taught at the Saffordville grade school. She took time out to devote full time to being a mother and farmer's wife. Later, she went to work for Hallmark Cards in Emporia. In 1956 the family moved to Salina where she was employed as a sales clerk for JC Penney Company. In 1959 the family moved to Wellington, Kansas and she continued to work for JC Penney until she began her employment with the City of Wellington in 1967. Joan served as City Treasurer, Deputy City Clerk, Assistant City Manager and retired as the Finance Director / City Clerk after 25 years of service.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Priscilla Circle, Searchers Sunday School class and served her church on many committees. Joan loved to travel, was an avid sports fan and compiled many scrap books containing memories of her family, friends and articles of general interest.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter Martin; sons, Larry and Lloyd Martin and a brother, Robert Carter.

Survivors include her granddaughter, Debra Cleary and her husband of Gary of Hernando, Mississippi; grandson, Kelby Martin of Mountain View, California; granddaughter, Aurora Cain of Charlotte, North Carolina, greatgrandchildren: Hunter Cleary, Colton Cleary, Cori Martin, Brieanna Martin and Dameon Cluchey.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 16, 2020.

Funeral services for Joan will follow the visitation and begin at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 16, 2020 in the chapel of Cornejo | Day Funeral Home & Crematory, Wellington, Kansas.

A memorial has been established in her name and loving memory with the Wellington Senior Center. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
